Graphic Novel vs. Traditional Novel

Meme hosted by Lauren @ Epilogue Reviews

Today's Question:
Graphic Novel vs. Traditional Novel

My Answer:  I personally prefer traditional novels.  I have tried to read some graphic novels, but do not get as much out of them.  That is kind of surprising to me, as I am often a more visual learner.  I guess I just prefer to form my own images in my mind rather than someone else developing them for me.

Now, some of my students absolutely love graphic novels.  I have found those that prefer the graphic novels - but this is not always true - are those that are reading on a lower level.  Do you suppose it is the same reason I do not steer toward graphic novels? - that the author/illustrator is providing the visual images that these readers need?

What are your thoughts?  Do you prefer graphic novels or the traditional novel?

  1. Exactly what I feel about graphic novels. They didn't provide any room for imagination. For me, the imagination is part of the reading fun, that's what make me feel like I'm going to another world inside my mind. Maybe for beginner, graphic novels are good for a start.

  2. I prefer traditional novels as well, as I feel you get a better sense of language, but there are some sophisticated graphic novels. Satrapi's Embroideries does some things that she couldn't have done in a traditional novel, and she makes use of some very sophisticated themes (that one, by the way, is not for the kids).

  3. I love both traditional novels and graphic novels, and I don't think either has anything to do with a persons reading level. I personally was introduced to graphic novels by younger friends who had reading levels way above my own. Usually I find that people who like graphic novels just find them more interesting than traditional novels and that usually has to do with the plot, characters and their own personal taste.

  4. I prefer traditional novels and find that graphic novels bore and aren't fun for me. I think they are definitely good for some people and that they provide enjoyment for others. I guess I miss the lack of writing that's in them, it goes against what I was raised on to "read" a book that doesn't have many words.
