The Golden Flute (Adventures of Lilli and Zane #1) by Catherine Lanigan
Publisher:  Cedar Fort, Inc.
Publication Date:  June 12th 2012
ISBN:  1462110231
Genre: Middle Grade mystery, action/adventure
Book Description:  She held up the flashlight and this time a very odd symbol caught her eye. It was a round ring and inside the ring was a pyramid and superimposed over it was a cross, like the cross hairs on a gun site.
Instinctively, she reached out to touch the symbol.
Just before impact, an electrical spark from the symbol on the wall to her fingers shot through her.
Teen treasure hunters Lilli and Zane have grown up in a world of ancient artifacts, coded messages, and long-buried mysteries. But there’s no telling what they’ll unearth when they face off against the infamous Zorav and his even-more-menacing advisor.
With the fate of the world in their hands, Lilli and Zane will have to stay one step ahead of danger, find the treasured artifacts, and keep them far away from their enemies or face death—and maybe even worse.
Masterfully written by bestselling author Catherine Lanigan, this thrilling action story keeps you guessing through every twist and turn. Cross continents and connect the clues along with Lilli and Zane as you’re pulled into a world of mystery and suspense. A must-read for adventurers of all ages!
My Thoughts:  If you love books with lots of mystery and intrigue, this one should be right up your alley!

Lilli, Zane, and Teddy seek out the mystery of a little golden horn that Lilli's mother sent to her for her birthday.  As they are investigating the artifacts and elements they run across, they are faced with magic, mystery, danger, and even the possibility of death.

My favorite character was Lilli.  I thoroughly loved the fact that she was her own person, not afraid of being different!  Her "oddities" are what make her likable, as well as adding to her strengths - and the story-line as well.  Teddy just appeared to be a great sidekick.  His skill with the computer made him a perfect part of the group.  Then there is Zane.  At times, I wanted to hate him.  I hated how he treated Lilli at times.  He worried too much how others thought of him.

There are lots of twists and turns along the way, and it definitely keeps you guessing and on the edge of your seat!!  This is a book that would transition well to an after-school movie (do they even have these anymore? - am I showing my age?)!

I enjoyed the historical and travel elements to the story - talk about being right up someone's alley!  I think this was the strength - the meat of the story!  I want to read this one to my class next year.  The realism of the friendships - the ups and downs - is something that I feel students can connect to.

I am glad this is a first in a series.  I look forward to reading what new adventures that Lilli and Zane get into.
