Publisher:  Random House Publishing Group
Publication Date:  June 12th 2012
ISBN:  0345523962
Genre:  Historical Fiction

Book Synopsis:  No one believed I was destined for greatness.

So begins Isabella’s story, in this evocative, vividly imagined novel about one of history’s most famous and controversial queens—the warrior who united a fractured country, the champion of the faith whose reign gave rise to the Inquisition, and the visionary who sent Columbus to discover a New World. Acclaimed author C. W. Gortner envisages the turbulent early years of a woman whose mythic rise to power would go on to transform a monarchy, a nation, and the world.

Young Isabella is barely a teenager when she and her brother are taken from their mother’s home to live under the watchful eye of their half-brother, King Enrique, and his sultry, conniving queen. There, Isabella is thrust into danger when she becomes an unwitting pawn in a plot to dethrone Enrique. Suspected of treason and held captive, she treads a perilous path, torn between loyalties, until at age seventeen she suddenly finds herself heiress of Castile, the largest kingdom in Spain. Plunged into a deadly conflict to secure her crown, she is determined to wed the one man she loves yet who is forbidden to her—Fernando, prince of Aragon.

As they unite their two realms under “one crown, one country, one faith,” Isabella and Fernando face an impoverished Spain beset by enemies. With the future of her throne at stake, Isabella resists the zealous demands of the inquisitor Torquemada even as she is seduced by the dreams of an enigmatic navigator named Columbus. But when the Moors of the southern domain of Granada declare war, a violent, treacherous battle against an ancient adversary erupts, one that will test all of Isabella’s resolve, her courage, and her tenacious belief in her destiny.

From the glorious palaces of Segovia to the battlefields of Granada and the intrigue-laden gardens of Seville, The Queen’s Vow sweeps us into the tumultuous forging of a nation and the complex, fascinating heart of the woman who overcame all odds to become Isabella of Castile.
The Beginning:
No one believed I was destined for greatness.  I came into the world in the Castilian township of Madrigal de las Altas Torres, the first child of my father, Juan II's marriage to his second wife, Isabel of Portugal, after whom I was named - an infanta, healthy and unusually quiet, whose arrival was heralded by bells and perfunctory congratulations but no fanfare.
My First Impression:
I have been so excited to read this book!  I absolutely love historical fiction!  The cover is so gorgeous, and the beginning builds some intrigue.  I don't think I will be disappointed!  I have heard so many rave reviews about this book!!!
Friday 56:
Carrillo approached us and told Beatriz to step aside.  He took me to the dais.  The courtiers drew back, staring at me for what seemed an impossibly long moment before heads lowered in deference.

The Absolutist by John Boyne
Publisher:  by Other Press
Publication Date:  July 10th 2012
ISBN:  1590515528
Book Synopsis:  A masterfully told tale of passion, jealousy, heroism and betrayal set in the gruesome trenches of World War I.

It is September 1919: twenty-one-year-old Tristan Sadler takes a train from London to Norwich to deliver a package of letters to the sister of Will Bancroft, the man he fought alongside during the Great War.

But the letters are not the real reason for Tristan's visit. He can no longer keep a secret and has finally found the courage to unburden himself of it. As Tristan recounts the horrific details of what to him became a senseless war, he also speaks of his friendship with Will--from their first meeting on the training grounds at Aldershot to their farewell in the trenches of northern France. The intensity of their bond brought Tristan happiness and self-discovery as well as confusion and unbearable pain.

The Absolutist is a masterful tale of passion, jealousy, heroism, and betrayal set in one of the most gruesome trenches of France during World War I. This novel will keep readers on the edge of their seats until its most extraordinary and unexpected conclusion, and will stay with them long after they've turned the last page.
The Beginning:
Seated opposite me in the railway carriage, the elderly lady in the fox-fur shawl was recalling some of the murders that she had committed over the years.
My First Impression:
This sounds so harsh!  But the last sentence of the synopsis really grabs me:  "This novel will keep readers on the edge of their seats until its most extraordinary and unexpected conclusion, and will stay with them long after they've turned the last page."  I just have to read it to get to the conclusion!!!  I do have a general idea of what the novel is about, but don't want to give away any spoilers on this one!!!
Friday 56:
I don't think anything of it.  What am I supposed to think?  I know that men die - their numbers are reported in the newspapers every day.

Publisher:  Musefish Independent Press
Publication Date:  September 16th 2011
ISBN:  0983993017
Genre:  Young Adult Fantasy
Book Description:  Quinn Robbins' life was everything she thought a teenager's should be. She has good friends, a family that she loves, good grades, and an after-school job she enjoys. And, she's just been asked out by Zander Cunningham, a popular football player and great guy. But one day when driving home after picking up her little sister from the baby-sitter's, she nearly hits a boy who, after running blindly into the street, mysteriously disappears.

The mystery only deepens as she figures out who the boy is; William Rose, a reclusive, awkward boy from school who always has his nose in a pile of books.

As she becomes more aware of his behavior it becomes more obvious how out of the ordinary William is and how hard he deliberately tries to blend into the background. This only intrigues her more and she finds herself working to find out more about him, and exactly where he keeps disappearing to.

On a whim one night she follows him and suddenly finds herself in a new world. One where William is a prince, literally, and she is treated like a princess. She also discovers that she is stuck; the gate back to her own world isn't always open.

Quinn finds herself smack in the middle of a modern-day fairy tale, on a course that will change her life forever.
The Beginning

She had dreamed the same dream hundreds of times; the details changed very little.  They had started when she was just a small child, although she could never fully remember them once she woke up.
My First Impression:
The idea of a fairy tale type story really intrigues me.  The description is a little whimsical.  I'm looking forward to diving in further!!
Friday 56:
As he opened the door, she noticed he was blushing a little, too.  His cheeks and the tips of his ears were pink. She almost giggled , a little giddy.

 The Beginning:
Even with the door latched on my mailbox at the Nordwall Student Center, I could see it brimming with all sorts of goodies.
 My first impression:
Sounds like an action packed middle grade adventure.  I have enjoyed many wonderful books through Cedar Fort tours that were of similar genre.  I did not realize just how fun they would be, but I have immensely enjoyed them.  I have very high hopes for this one!  I have seen some good reviews for the first book in this series - although I have not personally read it.
Friday 56:
I tilted my head to one side, curling my lower lip, as I rotated my shoulder.  A faint tinge of pain throbbed, beneath the bone.  Regardless of the ointment and the medicine running through my blood, if I didn't get professional help, there was bound to be an infection.

Driven by Lisa Nowak
Publisher: Webfoot Publishing
Publication Date:  May 2, 2012
ASIN:  B007ZW06ZK
Genre: YA Contemporary
Synopsis:  The last thing on 16-year-old Jess DeLand’s wish list is a boyfriend. She’d have to be crazy to think any guy would look twice at her. Besides, there are more important things to hope for, like a job working on cars and an end to her mom’s drinking. Foster care is a constant threat, and Jess is willing to sacrifice anything to stay out of the system. When luck hands her the chance to work on a race car, she finds herself rushing full throttle into a world of opportunities—including a boy who doesn’t mind the grease under her fingernails. The question is, can a girl who keeps herself locked up tighter than Richard Petty’s racing secrets open up enough to risk friendship and her first romance?

The Beginning:
If it hadn't been for Teri Sue Cline's Southern drawl, I'd probably been still sitting in the stands at Eugene Speedway, wishing I had the nerve to talk to one of the drivers.
My first impression:
I could totally relate!  I love watching NASCAR races - even the dirt track races here across the highway!!  However, I'd be so nervous - or "star struck" if I were to meet a NASCAR driver!!  The southern drawl comment reminds me of the strong southern drawl of Bill Elliott.....  I loved the first two books in the Full Throttle series!!!  This one is starting off just as wonderful!!
Friday 56
Cody slid out of his car and strolled into the barn, moisture slicking his leather jacket. Today his T-shirt read, I’m the person your mother warned you about, but he wore the same black Converse high tops and the same outlaw grin. I was beginning to wonder if he slept with that smirk on his face.
