The Unlikely and Unexpected Gift

The Unlikely Gift of Treasure Blume
by Lisa Rumsey Harris
Publisher: Sweetwater Books
Publication Date: November 13th 2012
ISBN:   1462110266
Genre:  Feel-good, romance, humor
Book Synopsis:  With her love of sweaters, goofy hair, and awkward manners—not to mention her family curse—Treasure Blume knows love is not in her future. That is, until she matches wits with Dennis Cameron, a divorced chef with a six-year-old daughter. Full of mischief, mayhem, and laugh-out-loud humor, this is an unlikely love story you’ll want to read over and over again!
My Thoughts:  What an amazing book!  This is one that everyone should read, and I mean everyone!!!

If we could all be like Treasure Blume, this world would be such a brighter place to live.  She has such a wonderful gift - one that allows her to look beyond what others see in her so that she can choose to do the right thing - even when others think she is crazy.

Treasure is the type of teacher that I so wish I could be.  She always goes that extra mile for the needs of her students!  What a breath of fresh air.    Even if the authorities are not sure she is doing what is right, and even if she is not sure it is safe, she takes that extra risk.    Students would be blessed to have her for a teacher.

Beyond that is the romance.  I don't know that I have ever read a more cleanly written romance story.  So sweet and inviting.  I found myself cheering Treasure along - she so deserved to have that special someone in her life, if ever anyone did.

And, what can I say about Grammy Blume.  She is such a fun character.  She is off the wall, so out-there.  Grammy was a wonderful addition to Treasure!

Now, everyone needs to go out there and get the book and read it.  I promise, you will not be disappointed. You will probably read it in one sitting - it is that addictive!!!

My Loving Vigil Keeping by Carla Kelly

My Loving Vigil Keeping
by Carla Kelly
Publisher:  Cedar Fort, Inc.
Publication Date:  August 14th 2012
ISBN:  1599558971
Genre:  Historical Fiction
Book Synopsis:  Della’s giving up all the comforts of bustling Salt Lake City to teach school in a rural coal mining camp. Little does she know, she may soon be giving up her heart as well. But when tragedy strikes in the Scofield Mine, Della’s life will be changed forever. Based on true events, this thrilling new romance from award-winning and bestselling author Carla Kelly is a must-read!
My Thoughts:  Oh, my goodness!  I just read my all-time favorite book!  No kidding!!  I really, really loved this book! My Loving Vigil Keeping by Carla Kelly is of course from my favorite genre – historical fiction & it also includes romance!!  The title comes from the lyrics of a very popular lullaby “All Through the Night” – one of my favorites as well.

Della is a young woman who had been orphaned early on- her mother had left when she was an infant, and her father was killed in a mine accident.   She grew up in the home of her wealthy uncle, where she was looked down upon, and pretty much took care of herself.  She got herself through school and eventually earned a one-year teaching certificate.  After a couple of years teaching in a typical community/school, she goes out on a limb and applies for and accepts a position in a coal-mining community called Winter Quarters, located in Scofield, Utah.

It’s almost as if she were returning home – there are many similarities to her childhood community.  However, the people of Winter Quarters relate her to the wealthy family that raised her and wonder why she is there.  She has to earn the respect of these people of Winter Quarters and find herself.

Owen, oh how I loved Owen!!  He is such a sweet, gentle man.  The father of a beautiful little girl who also lost her mother at a young age – her mother died giving birth.  Own is so perfect for Della.  This growing, possible romance was so great to read.  What I loved most about it was that it was not rushed. Real people with real issues and histories to overcome.  What happens in the end, I will let you read the book to find out.

You will not believe everything that goes on in this story!!!  Let me just tell you, there are many, many ups and downs.  Times I laughed and times I really cried!  I was cheering Della on throughout the whole book!  I found her to be the best protagonist I have encountered in some time.  She was just so real – emotions and actions so authentic.  The other characters – especially those in Winter Quarters – were just what I imagined.  They honestly made me want to check the place out for myself.  Sounds strange doesn’t it? Why would I want to go to an old coal-town?  Well, I was born and raised in West Virginia – where coal mining is a mainstay for many.  While I did not grow up in a family of miners, many of my friends did.  The town I grew up in was not a coal camp, but many years before I was born, that is what the town was all about!  So, many of the same characteristics and lifestyles still lingered.  Therefore, I completely related to the individuals in the novel.

Carla Kelly definitely knows what she is doing when writing a historical fiction.  The events in the story are based in part on a very tragic mining event – the Scofield mining disaster of 1900.  Lots of chilling events – many that made my heart bleed!!!  At one point I was so angry with what was going on – or really, what I thought was going on.  I was very happily surprised with the turn of events as the story unfolded.  This is most assuredly a must-read – so don’t let it get by you!!!!

About the Author:  Although Carla Kelly is well known among her readers as a writer of Regency romance, her main interest (and first writing success) is Western American fiction—more specifically, writing about America's Indian Wars. Although she had sold some of her work before, it was not until Carla began work in the National Park Service as a ranger/historian at Fort Laramie National Historic Site did she get serious about her writing career. (Or as she would be the first to admit, as serious as it gets.)

Carla wrote a series of what she now refers to as the "Fort Laramie stories," which are tales of the men, women and children of the Indian Wars era in Western history. Two of her stories, A Season for Heroes and Kathleen Flaherty's Long Winter, earned her Spur Awards from the Western Writers of America. She was the second woman to earn two Spurs from WWA (which, as everyone knows, is all you need to ride a horse). Her entire Indian Wars collection was published in 2003 as Here's to the Ladies: Stories of the Frontier Army. It remains her favorite work.

The mother of five children, Carla has always allowed her kids to earn their keep by appearing in her Regencies, most notably Marian's Christmas Wish, which is peopled by all kinds of relatives. Grown now, the Kelly kids are scattered here and there across the U.S. They continue to provide feedback, furnish fodder for stories and make frantic phone calls home during the holidays for recipes. (Carla Kelly is some cook.)

Carla's husband, Martin, is Director of Theatre at Valley City State University, in Valley City, North Dakota. Carla is currently overworked as a staff writer at the local daily newspaper. She also writes a weekly, award-winning column, "Prairie Lite."

Carla only started writing Regencies because of her interest in the Napoleonic Wars, which figures in many of her Regency novels and short stories. She specializes in writing about warfare at sea, and about the ordinary people of the British Isles who were, let's face it, far more numerous than lords and ladies.

Hobbies? She likes to crochet afghans, and read British crime fiction and history, principally military history. She's never happier than talking about the fur trade or Indian Wars with Park Service cronies. Her most recent gig with the National Park Service was at Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site on the Montana/North Dakota border.

Here's another side to this somewhat prosaic woman: She recently edited the fur trade journal of Swiss artist Rudolf F. Kurz (the 1851-1852 portion), and is gratified now and then to be asked to speak on scholarly subjects. She has also worked for the State Historical Society of North Dakota as a contract researcher. This has taken her to glamorous drudgery in several national archives and military history repositories. Gray archives boxes and old documents make her salivate.

Her mantra for writing comes from the subject of her thesis, Robert Utley, that dean of Indian Wars history. He told her the secret to writing is "to put your ass in the chair and keep it there until you're done." He's right, of course.

Her three favorite fictional works have remained constant through the years, although their rankings tend to shift: War and Peace, The Lawrenceville Stories, and A Town Like Alice. Favorite historical works are One Vast Winter Count, On the Border with Mackenzie and Crossing the Line. Favorite crime fiction authors are Michael Connelly, John Harvey and Peter Robinson.

And that's all she can think of that would interest anyone.

The Kindling by Braden Bell - Review & Character Interview

The Kindling by Braden Bell
Publisher:  CedarFort Inc
Publication Date:  July 10th 2012
ISBN:  9781462110278
Genre:  Middle Grade - action/adventure
Book Synopsis:  All thirteen-year-old Conner Dell wants to do is pass pre-algebra, play lacrosse, and possibly kiss Melanie Stephens. He didn’t mean to set anyone’s gym shorts on fire or make school lunches explode. But now that the strange powers inside him have been ignited, Conner’s normal teenage life is about to go up in flames!

This fast-paced novel is non-stop fun for kids and parents alike. With characters you can’t help but root for, a plot that keeps you guessing, and plenty of humor, it’s a guaranteed thrill ride from cover to cover!
My Thoughts:  I have been a middle school teacher for eight years, and I have to say that this is probably one of the best books I have read that is targeted for this level.  The action and intensity was amazing!  I could just picture several of my students faces as I read this book.  I stayed up late a few nights to read "just one more"  chapter!!!

The twists and turns in this book really through me for a loop.  There were many times that I had to make myself get up and take a walk just to catch my breath - and I am being literal here!!

Connor, Lexa, and Melanie are your typical middle school students - until one day strange things start happening around them.  That sounds so funny, as it seems like strange things happening around middle school kids is about average!!!  I remember my years of middle school, and now as a teacher I can just see kids reacting the way these three do.  I found so much of the story to be hilarious.  Middle school kids are just a different breed of kid, but I really enjoy working with them.  These three seem to think that the teachers are out to get them - but don't they all!!!!!!  There is a fun play of Light against Dark in this story.  It all leads these three on a wonderful adventure of their life!!

I am definitely going to be sharing this book with my students and fellow teachers.  I want to commend Braden Bell for writing such a great story for our middle school students.  It was such a fun book to read over my summer break.  I can't wait to see what he comes up with next.  I sure hope it is another story that involves Connor, Lexa, and Melanie!!!

He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in theatre from Brigham Young University and a Ph.D. in educational theatre from New York University. Now for the best part:

Character Interview with Conner Dell

Would you say your childhood was happy? Why? Why not?
I'd say pretty happy. But since I'm only 13, it wasn't that long ago.

What’s your greatest talent?
I don't know. I like to do a lot of things. Lacrosse, football, I was in a play and liked that too. I don't know what my talents are, though. I'm pretty fast, I guess. Yeah, probably running.

What can you offer the world?
Amazing lacrosse skills? Hotness? (jk)

What’s your strongest opinion?
Probably shouldn't say, but involves Justin Bieber.

Do you say what’s on your mind?
Not usually. But because of stuff that happens, my sister and her friend end up being able to read each other's minds--so they end up hearing a lot.

Are you a peacekeeper or a troublemaker?
Peacekeeper.

Would you consider yourself intelligent?
No. Not really. I'm not stupid, but there's a lot of people way smarter than me. My sister Lexa's best friend Melanie is super-smart.

If you could be any other person, who would you be?
Michael Phelps, LeBron James, Tim Tebow, Either of the Mannings. And, maybe that guy from One Direction that all the girls like. But don't tell anyone I said that.

Which character trait do you think is most important? Why?
I think being honest with yourself and working hard and being nice to people. I don't always do those things, but I think they're important.

Would you lie if you knew you wouldn’t be caught?
No. I don't to make myself sound like I'm perfect or anything but I don't like lying.

What’s your biggest fault and/or asset?
My biggest fault is that I'm kind of lazy in school and I joke around a lot. I guess my biggest asset is that I try to be nice to everyone.

What secret would you feel the most vulnerable sharing with anyone?
Well, something happened when I got kidnapped by the bad guys. It's something I don't like talking about very much.

Whom would you contact first to share good news?
Probably my sister, Lexa. We're twins so we're pretty close even though she can be annoying sometimes.

Why should readers like you and/or care about your story?
Well, I guess because it's kind of a fun story about regular kids who experience some crazy things--strange powers, creepy teachers, a battle with the forces of evil on the Small World ride at Disneyworld. You know, normal teenage stuff.

Thank you Braden & Conner for stopping by my blog!!!

Will it be possible for her to leave her family’s life behind and live the life she has always dreamed of?
I am so excited to be part of the Carnival Girl blog tour.  I am even more excited to have a guest post provided by the author Sonja Herbert.  I'd like to take this time to warmly welcome Sonja to my blog, and I do hope that all the readers pick up her book - you won't be sorry!!!

Guest Post from Author Sonja Herbert

During the few times we carnival children attended school, I once received an A for a story about a Greek myth I had written, and on that day I decided to write about my mother’s life when I grew up.

Many years later, I married an American GI and moved with him to the States. We bought a home in Manti, and one day I did a brave thing. I went to nearby Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, and asked if I could attend a class. They agreed. If I’d get a good grade, I could keep taking classes. I started with English 101. Studying came easy to me, and I enjoyed the class a lot. Our final paper was to be an autobiography. I wrote about my childhood in our traveling carnival in Germany, and was quite surprised to receive an A+.

All through the time I raised my six children, I kept attending first Snow College, then SUU, and BYU. When I received my MA in Language Acquisition and my two youngest children were in middle school, I decided the time had come to write in earnest. I started writing about my mother’s life. As the story unfolded, I realized that it would not be complete unless I also told the story of my childhood, and so I did.

I originally called my memoir Conversations with Margot (my mother’s first name), but since the novel I wrote about her life isn’t published yet, I decided to re-name the memoir and publish it first.

And that’s how Carnival Girl began.
About the Author:  Sonja Herbert and her five siblings were raised in a caravan, traveling the carnival circuit from town to town in post-World War II Germany.
Sonja converted to the LDS Church, later married, and immigrated to the United States, where she received a bachelor of arts degree at Southern Utah University in Cedar City, Utah, and a master of arts degree from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. She also raised six children, taught school and ESL, and is now a freelance writer.
Besides her childhood memoir, Sonja has also written many autobiographical stories, which have been published in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series and other anthologies. A biographical novel about her half-Jewish mother’s experiences in Nazi Germany is almost finished.
Sonja lives in Provo with her husband and cat. You can find more about her unusual life at germanwriter.com.
My Thoughts:  Carnival Girl is a beautifully written, heart-felt novel of Sonja's family life following WWII.  I wan honestly not sure what to expect when I started reading the book, and I was so wonderfully surprised at the very moving and authentic writing of Sonja Herbert.  This is probably one of my favorite reads this year.

The novel starts out with Sonja's mother - Mutti - coming to visit her in Utah from Germany.  The story goes back and forth between the present time and the visit to memories and recollections of their past in the carnival circuit.  Sonja's family went through many ups and downs during her childhood; and during that time she developed a strong faith in God - even though it was not encouraged by her family.

I thoroughly enjoyed the vivid descriptions that Sonja was able to provide us of everything around her.  From the descriptions of her 5 siblings, her parents (Mutti and Vati), the towns in which the circuit traveled, the orphanage in which they stayed for a short time, and her own internal voice.  I do believe that Sonja Herbert is a true master at the art of writing.  She is able to tell in such detail all her joys and sorrows - much more than I can even think of mine.  The emotions she portrays are so endearing.  I felt for her throughout.  I also felt deeply for Mutti.  The time she must have had in raising 6 children while traveling a carnival circuit, and all during the time following WWII.  I could not even begin to fathom all of the hardships in which this family had to prevail.  However, Sonja Herbert gives us such a wonderful glimpse at their life - I could not imagine that she could have left much out.

The story of Sonja's journey in her faith, while so intertwined, is not the forefront of the novel, but it definitely is an important aspect of her life.  I don't feel that the story or her life would have been the same without it.

I'm telling you - you really need to pick this book up and read it cover to cover.  The feeling and emotions that I traveled through as I read this book made me feel as if I were on a roller-coaster, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Thank you Sonja for sharing your life with us, and allowing me to be a part of your tour!

The Lost Curse by T. Lynn Adams

The Lost Curse by T. Lynn Adams

Publisher:  Cedar Fort, Inc.
Publication Date:  July 10th 2012
ISBN:  1599559552
Genre:  YA adventure
Book Synopsis:  Easing his pace, Jonathon advanced only inches at a time. Instinct heightened beneath unseen eyes and he knew he moved in the presence of a creature that could kill him. As he progressed forward, his light caught a presence to his left… a human presence. The dark image startled him and Jonathon whirled to face the threat, the beam of his headlamp cutting into the darkness.

Jonathon’s had more than enough adventure for one lifetime. That’s why he’s planning to spend this summer camping in quiet central Utah with his Peruvian friend, Severino. But when the two of them accidentally discover an ancient artifact, they wind up in more danger than ever!

Now Jonathon, Severino, and their new friend, Tallie, will have to choose between protecting a secret that’s been hidden for centuries or saving their own lives!

A perfect combination of action, thrills, suspense, and a hint of romance, this is a cover-to-cover adventure that you simply can’t miss. Join forces with this dynamic trio of teens as they delve deep into the mysteries of the past. An entertaining read that’s sure to keep you guessing!
My Thoughts:  You'll have to hold on while reading this one, because T. Lynn Adams provides such non-stop action that you'll not know whether you are coming or going!!   Not only that, but the amount of history and archaeological information that has gone into this story tells me that the author dove right in when he wrote this one.  He had to put a significant amount of time into his research to make this so realistic.

To think all this happens when friends get together to go camping!  I guess you just never know what could happen, huh?  They boys stumble upon artifacts that launch them into a very harrowing adventure - with others who are very interested in what they have found.  Could you imagine?  It all becomes about trust - who can they trust?

I loved jonathon, Severino, and Tallie.  They were very fun to tag along with.  The skill and thought that they put into everything they did made the story what it is!!  The fact that they cared enough about the significance of what they found puts them on a level far above their typical peers.  The fact that they even had to think about whether that significance overshadowed their own survival was amazing!

The accuracy and truth behind the ancient facts / history truly made the story for me.  Nothing was sugar coated, rather just put out there for the characters and the readers to take it at face value.  I really appreciate the fact that the author put in the time and effort into the research.

This is a story that will spark the interest  at any age group as well as male and female alike.  It is very well put together - a fun action adventure.
About the Author:  I’m terrified of spiders, can’t fry eggs, and my inability to bake a chocolate chip cookie has become family legend. But blessings come from weaknesses. None of my children have a pet tarantula. My husband volunteers to fry the eggs for breakfast. And all of my sons and daughters are expert cookie bakers. Life if like that–it compensates for our weaknesses by sending others into our lives. Isn’t that wonderful? Writing books and reading them is another wonderful way we can strengthen ourselves and others. I believe it is a writer’s duty to craft words that lift people and help them feel better about their personal lives and those around them, to see the good in life. That is a responsibility I take very seriously. You can learn more about T. Lynn’s writing at tlynnadams.blogspot.com. And don’t forget to check out her other book:  Tombs of Terror.

Charlie's Girl by Mary-Helen and Daniel Foxx

http://www.cedarfortbooks.com/blog-tour-charlies-girl/

Charlie's Girl by Mary-Helen Foxx & Daniel Foxx
Publisher:  Cedar Fort, Inc.
Publication Date:   May 8th 2012
ISBN:  1599559684
Book Synopsis:  Fourteen-year-old Rosalind has always been a foster girl without a past, until she’s sent to live with a long-lost grandmother in a house full of memories—and secrets. Soon Rosalind discovers that there’s more to her family history than she ever dreamed. Set in 1960s South Carolina, this unforgettable story of family, friendship, and faith is perfect for readers of all ages.
My Thoughts:  Charlie's Girl is a very beautifully written book!  My heart was totally engrossed in the characters and their story from page one all the way to the end - family, friends, tragedy, small town, faith - what more could a reader ask for!!

Rosalind, Oh Rosalind!  I totally fell in love with her.  Everything about her was so real - to the point it hurt sometimes.  My heart poured out for her; she has had such a rough life.  And Grace, there were times I totally hated her, just to turn around and make me love her.  I could not imagine having to deal with all the losses she had faced.  The supporting characters: Mark William, Muriel, The Watson family - all very well-developed - loved each and every quirk!

How the authors were able to put so much reality and life into all the different situations in this book - and there were many.  Wow!  They either had to have personal experience or did some deep research.  Everything had such an authenticity about it. Kudos to the authors!!!

Very strong emotions and faith-based / religious issues involved in this book.  It is definitely not for the weak at heart!  The family dynamics and relationships were very  deep - the ups and downs really had me going.  The religious controversies involved - I learned so much from.  These issues truly made a person think hard and long about their own beliefs.  I thought the authors handled this very well.  They did not push heavily toward one belief or the other, but made it thought provoking so that the reader could make their own choices.

Wow, the end was so powerful!  I really hated that the story ended.  I am wanting to know what is going to happen next.  I do hope that the authors consider writing a follow up - maybe dealing more with the mom's (Nellie's) side of the family - as this one is based on the father, Charlie's family.

This one is definitely a 5 star pick!!!!  Get it - read it!  You won't regret it!!

Garden of the Lost Souls by Erik Olsen

Publisher:  Cedar Fort, Inc.
Publication Date:  July 10th 2012
ISBN:  146211010X
Genre:  YA/middle-grade adventure, fantasy
Book Synopsis:  Flin climbed to the top of the Cathedral and was now pinned against the anemone’s ceiling while dozens of enraged Snazzards scaled up after him.
I can’t climb any higher he thought, desperately looking around for any last options. There’s no place left to go! They’re going to get me! Panicked, he jumped and fell hundreds of feet through the air as the ground raced toward him.
“NOOooo…!” he screamed.

After all he’s been through, it seems Flin’s life is finally getting back to normal—well, as normal as you can get when you’re stuck hundreds of miles under the earth’s surface. But in Cobble Cavern, nothing stays normal for long.

And when Flin and the rest of his classmates are sucked into another adventure, they’ll need more than a little magic to make it out alive. Especially since this time Flin will have to choose between saving an entire village from destruction or rescuing his own best friend!

Packed with action, humor, and tons of twists, this second installment in the Flin’s Destiny series will keep your kids up with a flashlight long past bedtime. Delve deeper into the mysterious underworld in this heart-pounding story that’s bound to become a family favorite.
My Thoughts:  I didn't know that it could get so much better - but it sure did!!!  I really enjoyed book one - Cobble Cavern - in the  Flin's Destiny Series, but this one takes it to a whole new level of awesome!!!

I found the action and pacing in Garden of the Lost Souls to be very fast and exciting!  When you start this book, be prepared, hold onto your seat, because you will be off on an amazing ride!!  The descriptions of the characters and this under-world are so much more vivid in this book - and like I said before, I thought they were great in the first one!!!

I don't want to sound so enthusiastic that it feels phony, but this is honestly the way I feel.  Erik Olsen has created a series that will attract a wide variety of readers.  I am very awe-inspired with this series.  If this book is any indication on what will continue in the next, I want to read that next book NOW!!!

All of the characters I loved from Cobble Cavern are back in Garden of the Lost Souls.  They are in for some thrilling adventures that sometimes make you feel you are on a roller-coaster ride.  Flin at one point is believed dead, and at other points is the champion or purveyor of strength in the given situation.  His friends, Pilt, Flowell, Fezzy, and others play larger rolls in this book - we get to learn so much more about them.  We even get to see what happens to Sump, Parcell, and Ruel - you'll not believe it!!!  And, there are even more creative characters to be had - Delly, Pepper, and Froggit - and more!  Don't you just love those names!!  Stepping out into other parts of the under-world - finding more caverns and spaces, Flin and crew continue to run into danger, but also find some beautiful worlds with some very friendly creatures.

Something that I thought brought so much more to this story is the glimmer of a relationship beginning between Flin and Flowell.  I hope we see more of that in future installments!! This was not at all up in your face, but rather in the outskirts.  The intertwining relationships between all of the characters is so very creative - some things I were not at all what I had expected.

Thank you Erik Olsen for writing this wonderful fantasy adventure.  Like I said about Cobble Cavern, this will definitely be shared with my students - and more than likely part of a read-aloud!!!!

***Aren't the covers on both books gorgeous.  Could you imagine what a picture book would be like!!!!

The Guardians of Elijah's Fire by Frank L. Cole

by Frank L. Cole

Publisher:  Cedar Fort, Inc.
Publication Date:  June 12th 2012
ISBN:  1462110576
Genre:  Middle Grade Action / Adventure
Description:  Just when they thought they were safe, Amber, Trendon and their classmates get yanked back into the action. With the Tebah Stick in enemy hands, Amber becomes a target and it seems even her closest allies can’t be trusted. Now the gang will have to travel through enemy territory to protect a deadly ancient weapon that could cause the earth’s utter destruction.
This thrilling tale ups the action and doubles the danger. Bestselling author, Frank L. Cole delivers an addicting read for adventurers of all ages.
My Thoughts:  What a very entertaining book to read.  I did not read the first book in the series, but still found pleasure in reading this one.  Would I have had a better experience / understanding if I had read the first one? - well yeah.  But, I was still able to enjoy the story.  I hope one day that I can read the first book in the series.

This story was so easy to get into.  The action almost started from page one!  It is a real grabber!!!   Amber has received a mysterious birthday gift, that she suspects comes from her Archaeology teacher.  She gets a phone call in the middle of the night from someone she least expects telling her she is in danger.  And that is how it starts - can you imagine - it only gets better.

Besides the fact that the writing is filled with adventure, keeping the reader on edge throughout - and in such an entertaining way - this book is written in such a way that readers of all ages can pick it up and find something to like.

I found that there were some elements that I would compare to Harry Potter, as well as other Cedar Fort books I have read lately.  However, I think that Frank L. Cole has a writing style that can easily distinguish him from those other authors.  It has almost an addicting quality.

Thank you Cedar Fort for allowing me to take part in this book tour, and thank you Frank L. Cole for writing something that I would be proud to share with my children and students.

About the Author:   Frank L. Cole was born into a family of Southern storytellers and wrote his first book as age eight. Sadly he misplaced the manuscript and has since forgotten what he wrote. Highly superstitious and gullible to a fault, Frank will believe any creepy story you tell him, especially ones involving ghosts and Bigfoot. Currently along with his wife and three children, he resides in the shadow of a majestic western mountain range, which is most likely haunted. You can learn more about Frank’s writing at www.franklcole.com. And don’t forget to check out his other books:

The Rifts of Rime (Quickened Chronicles #1) by Steven L. Peck
Publisher:  Sweetwater Books
Publication Date:  June 12th 2012
ISBN:  1599559676
Genre:  Middle Grade Animal Adventure
Author links:  www.sciencebysteve.net

“There is one thing, which might show some commitment on your part . . .”
“Name it!” The Thane relaxed again on his spear.
“Deliver the Tail, alive, here, alone, one week from tonight.” The Wolf sat back on the grass of the meadow.
“I will send him, but you must kill him yourself. Agreed?”
The Wolf licked her chops, “Agreed.”
In a world overtaken by greed and a ruthless, power-hungry dictator, Pinecone knows he’s no warrior. But when he’s entrusted with the sacred Scroll of Quickening, an ancient record that holds great power, Pinecone must summon the courage to protect the scroll. If he doesn’t, its secrets will be lost forever.
Meanwhile, Pinecone’s friend Leafe is mounting a makeshift rebellion to fend off the Thane whose evil might grows stronger every day. But her efforts may force her into some troubling alliances.
This thrilling story is full of suspense, surprises, and an epic struggle of good versus evil. Steven L. Peck brings to life a richly detailed fantasy world akin to Brian Jacques’s Redwall series. A truly magical adventure any reader is sure to get lost in.
My thoughts:  The Rifts of Rime is a very cute and fun book.  I am not usually one who likes stories with a bunch of talking animals, but this one I truly enjoyed.   In some ways it put me in mind of Watership Down by Richard Adams.  Both dealt with adventuresome animals and included great battles and triumphs, as well as a good moral background.  My mother read Watership Down to me as a child, and it still pulls some strings on my heart.  So, to relate The Rifts of Rime to that book really means something to me.

I fell in love with many of the characters:  Pinecone, Leafe, and even The Tail - Klish - and these by far are not the only ones.  I found it fun to read about the interactions of the many "quickened" animal species - wolves, squirrels, marmots, ants, etc. These chosen animals are those that are intelligent in some way.   All the interactions were tied to their beliefs in the lore of the Wealdend and The Book of Quickening.

The whole storyline revolves around a power hungry gray squirrel that tries to overthrow the current sacred leaders.  He does so in such a way to make it seem like those he is overthrowing have either died or have done something against the Wealdend - so that it appears that he is a "hero" and the rightful new leader.  However, he underestimates some very strong individuals who stand up and demonstrate their intelligence and faith in the Wealdend.  Although the true followers of the Wealdend are lesser in number than the followers of the betrayer, their united front is very strong and something to be reckoned with.

The message behind this story is quite powerful and very smart.  Steven Peck is very creative, and writes a tale that I feel most middle school students could relate to on some level.  In sharing some of the story with my students, many perked up and were asking questions - I think it would make an awesome read-aloud, not only to middle grade students, but to upper elementary as well.

Again, thanks to Cedar Fort for offering up a wonderful book, and allowing me to take part in another wonderful blog tour.  Be sure to check out their many wonderful titles.

The Shapeshifter's Secret by Heather Ostler

The Shapeshifter's Secret by Heather Ostler
Publisher:  Cedar Fort   (Facebook, Twitter)
Publication Date:  June 12th 2012
ISBN: 1462110339
Genre: YA Paranormal Romance
Book Synopsis:  Julia is finally discovering what–not who–she is.

Like any sixteen-year-old, Julia's used to dealing with problems. From her overprotective father to her absent mother to a teacher who definitely has it in for her. But everything changes when Julia's reactions become oddly vicious and angry---more animal than human. This action-packed adventure has it all: humor, romance, and a plot that will keep you guessing to the very last page.
My Thoughts:  Isn't that a beautiful cover?  I find it quite attractive!  As good as I feel about the cover, I feel even more so about the book itself!!

I first jumped on board this tour, because it is a Cedar Fort Tour, and I have absolutely loved every book and tour that I have taken part in from Cedar Fort.  I just knew that this one was not going to disappoint.

This was such a fun book to read.  I really find shape-shifter books fascinating.  I have read several - most being werewolf stories, but this one goes a step beyond.  Julia finds herself losing control, letting her anger getting the best of her.  Her father, Lancer is an overprotective father, who we find has had good reason to be.  Sierra is Julia's best friend.  She sticks by Julia through thick and thin - even through the changes that she must learn to deal with.  Then there is Liam and his son, Caleb.  Liam is Lancer's friend, Caleb is Julia's age.  Julia thought that Caleb was simply a new boy, but he ended up being someone to assist her through  her transition to her new life.  And last but not least, there is Terrance - her love interest.  So many great characters - so important to the story.

I love the coming of age story-line.  I could not imagine learning something so drastic about my life, during high school no less.  To know that emotions are a trigger to shape-shifting, at a time in her life when her emotions are on overload!!  Her father has never wanted to talk to her about her mother, but now she has to learn about her the hard way - hearing some very traumatic information about her too.  In addition to learning about her heritage, Julia is trying to be a typical teenager, learning about romance and her heart.

In some ways The Shapeshifter's Secret puts me in mind of Harry Potter  - the setting at Lockham Castle, where Julia learns about herself and her new life.  Her friends and teachers are such an important part of the story. The villain - or villainess in this case, who has a special connection to Julia, and also want to get rid of  her, adds another similar intrigue.  I really think that it has the potential to be another great series.

The writing style draws you immediately into the book.  There was an ease about it.  I could have read on and on - not caring about the time.  If it were not for work, I probably would have continued reading from page one to the end in one setting.

Honestly though, I think that there are a few things that were left unfinished.  I am hoping that this means that this will indeed be further developed into a series.  I have so many questions bout some of the characters.  But it was definitely worth the read.  It was actually a very relaxing book that provided me a nice day on the couch doing what I most love to do - escape into a great book!!!  Another one to share with my students!!!

About the Author:  Heather Ostler grew up near the mountains with a rambunctiously entertaining family. She majored in English at Utah Valley University, and soon began composing stories about masquerades, water nymphs, and shapeshifters. She and her husband, Kellen, reside in Highland, Utah with two remarkably pleasant pugs.
